As July wraps up, I find myself doing a quiet end‑of‑month reflection. Maybe it’s the mid‑summer stillness that I used to replan the remainder of my year. Maybe it’s the natural pause before the panic of Q4. Or maybe it’ssimply that this is the time of year when I turn another year older, and with that comes a little built‑in perspective.
Not the “make a wish and blow out candles” kind. The “what did this year teach me and how can I implement the lessons” kind.
Here’s what this year reminded me:
1. Growth doesn’t always look like big milestones. Sometimes it’s the small, unglamorous shifts! It’s the boundary you held, the conversation you handled differently, the misalignment you accepted, the moment you chose clarity over speed. Those are the things that change you, your teams, and leadership.
2. You can’t lead well if you don’t pause. Not stop. Not quit. Not disappear. Just pause. A moment to breathe, recalibrate, and ask yourself, “Is the way I’m leading still aligned with the leader I want to be?” July is a perfect month for that question.
3. The people around you matter more than the plans you make. This year reinforced that leadership isn’t about carrying everything. It’s about building relationships strong enough that you don’t have to. It’s about having a team (and processes) you can trust to help you through the rough patches.
4. You’re allowed to evolve. Leaders often feel pressure to stay consistent, steady, predictable. But the truth is, the best leaders are the ones who let themselves grow. Even when it’s inconvenient, even when it means changing habits that once served them. Even when it feels messy.
5. Gratitude is a strategy. Not the fluffy kind. The intentional kind that says, “I see the effort. I see the progress. I see the person.” Teams rise when they feel seen.
As I close July, I’m carrying these lessons forward. Yes my birthday makes me introspective but I am carrying these forward because these lessons give me a chance to lead with a little more wisdom, a little more compassion, and a lot more clarity.
